i40e driver does not work due to the unsupported SFP+ module type

I compiled and installed the network adapter driver for PCIe 40 Gb Ethernet(version 3.4.2). The driver is also loaded in the kernel successfully (Ubuntu 16.04). However, when I connect QSFP+ cables I am getting the following error message:

Rx/Tx is disabled on this device because an unsupported SFP+ module type was detected.

Is this because I am not using Intel QSFP+ cables?

Is there any way to allow unsupported SFP?

Best,

Marjan
