promisc function does not work with VF in XL710 Network card

$

Hi,

In our cloud, there is a powerful machine with some NIC, one of the NICs is xl710, it is 40G card.  I created 4 VFs on it, and assigned them to 4 VM (virtual machine) instances. For exampe. VM1 use VF1, VM2 use VF2, VM3 use VF3, VM4 use VF4. Now I need to use VM4 to monitor the other three VMs. In VM4, I set the VF card promisc, but it can not receive the unicast packet but only can receive the broadcast and multicast packets. For example: I can ping VM2 on VM1, but on VM4, it can not get the traffic of the ping packets.

The host OS is ubuntu 14.04, 3.13.0-52-generic. The guest OS is ubuntu 14.04 3.13.0-49-generic.

I heard promisc function should work with XL710 card.

Do you have any idea about it ?

Thanks a lot.

I have set up SR-IOV on a Dell C6145 that has an Intell 82576.

Configuration is

VM1 is assigned a direct VF,  on network 10.10.6.0/22

VM2 on same host is not assigned a VF, and has a bridged network br0 to 10.10.6.0/22

VM3 on same host is also on bridged network br0

Separate Physical machine Ph1 is also on 10.10.6.0/22

Ph1 can ping VM1, VM2, VM3

VM1 can ping Ph1 , but not VM2 or VM3

VM2 can ping VM3 and Ph1

VM3 can ping VM2 and Ph1

using tcpdump on VM1, I can see arp broadcast asking for mac address, and arp tables shows it knows the mac address, but no packets are being delivered/routed.

Is there something I am overlooking?

How to add ntuple filter with different masks?

$

Hi.

We are trying add different ntuple rules with different masks but nic doesn't allow to do so.

For example:

ethtool -N enp7s0f1 flow-type tcp4 src-ip 172.16.0.0 m 0.0.255.255 action -1

After adding above rule, when i try adding another rule with different mask, i get error

ethtool -N enp7s0f1 flow-type tcp4 src-ip 192.168.0.0 m 0.0.0.255 action -1

I got this error

rmgr: Cannot insert RX class rule: Invalid argument

and that error on dmesg

ixgbe 0000:07:00.1 enp7s0f1: Only one mask supported per port

And this is also valid for src-ip dst-ip src-port dst-port pairs. I can add a rule only if  it has same mask for all options.

These are properties of my test machine.

Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82599ES 10-Gigabit SFI/SFP+ Network Connection (rev 01)

Kernel version: 3.15.9

ixgbe version: 4.0.1-k-rh7.1

OS: Centos 7

ethtool version: 3.8 (also tried with 3.18)

I wonder if there is a solution for that? Is it because of nic capability? or can it be fixed by recompiling driver with an option? etc.

Thanks for any help.

Debian Wheezy with Intel I350-T2 bonding issue

Hi,

some time ago I tried using Intel i350 with Debian Wheezy:

yyyy@xxxx:~/igb-5.2.9.4/src$ uname -a

Linux xxxx 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.63-2+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux

yyyy@xxxx:/home/yyyy/igb-5.2.9.4/src# modinfo igb

description:    Intel(R) Gigabit Ethernet Network Driver

yyyy@xxxx:/home/yyyy/igb-5.2.9.4/src# ip -V

ip utility, iproute2-ss140804

I was using bonding in 802.3ad mode for bonding with an Extreme-Networks switch. I had 2 similar servers, with identical configuration. Old one was using old e1000 interfaces with 802.3ad bonding, l3+l4 hash. New one was using I350-T2 dual port adapter with the same configuration. No Virtual Machines. Issue was on I350 around 20% packets to/from some random source/destination IPs were dropped. Servers were actually cloned so I'm certain there was no misconfiguration. I've tried disabling anti spoof check (https://communities.intel.com/message/192668#192668) but no luck, it doesn't work on my iproute2 and kernel (has this been fixed yet?). Any hints how to compile driver without anti spoof? Did anyone experienced similar symptoms?

In the end the fix was not to use bonding at all. While using 2 separate ports on this I350-T2 adapter, with the same VLANs, the same IPs - everything works flawless. This is why I assume a problem with igb driver on I350-T2 using bonding (with VLANs).

UPDATE: actually I've found Latest Flexible Port Partitioning Paper is now available.  Learn about QoS and SR-IOV! which confirms there's an issue with 802.3ad. Can anyone give me a hint how to compile igb driver without anti spoofing feature?

Intel VT 82575GB WOL issues

$

Hi,

I'm having some issues with wake on LAN on a Intel quad port VT - 82575GB. I see different messages on release notes saying it's not supported or it is support but only on port 1. I do have two other Intel VT quad ports - 82576 which work correctly. I've ran the bootutil and have enabled the WOL on port1 but it doesn't seem to take hold as in function once rebooted. when checking the status again it does say it's enabled.

So my main questions is does the quad port VT support WOL, eithere no or just on port 1. And my second questions is there a specific way to enable it and use it? is it actually OS controlled or NIC level controlled? for refrence im using this on esxi 6.0 and it's on the HCL.

Thanks

Edit:

I did notice that the firmware version is also different on the cards, the on that is working is IGB device version 1.5.1 and the one that is not is IGB device version 1.1.0, any idea how to upgrade that? havn't seen a download for neweset firmware

ipxe on i210-AT, what is the best way?

$

I am trying to put an ipxe rom image on the option rom of an i210-at adapter, but so far with limited success:

1) building the ipxe image for i210: ok

2) burn with flashrom : not supported

3) burn with bootutil.exe : not supported

4) burn with lanconf.exe: it is possible to read out "flash" and "nvm" files (which turn out identical), an option to write flash files is present but unavailable (probably due to protection jumper?), but as far as I can tell no way to update just the option rom part

reading the i210 data sheet and looking at addresses through lanconf gives a rough idea how to merge/pad/patch up a new "flash" file containing the existing "shadow ram" and "secure area" but with my custom option rom. I have made such a file but not yet dared try to flash it to the adapter.

I can't help but thinking there must be an better/easier way

Any ideas?

Intel I218-LM and Symantec Endpoint Causing Loss of Ethernet

$

I see that a driver was recently released to address an issue with SEP and sleep.  I have this driver installed on my laptop, a Lenovo T450s, driver version 12.12.80.1950.  I have not experienced the problem that this driver was to correct, so I suppose that it is indeed fixed.  However, I am experiencing another problem that perhaps this driver may have broken.

It seems SEP 12.1.5 has a problem with this card/driver and file transfers.  If I initiate a transfer of several hundred MB or a couple GB then it'll copy about 10 MB and I'll lose the Ethernet connection.  A reboot will get the NIC working again and this problem does not effect the wireless.  It'll also drop off while surfing the Internet, not downloading anything but the websites, so the size of the download doesn't play a role.  Uninstalling SEP also fixes the problem, though I must have antivirus on our corporate computers.

Any ideas out there?

Multicast not working Intel X710-DA4

We have a couple of Intel X710-DA4 quadport 10Gbit cards but it seems multicasting doesn't work from or to them.

I installed the latest firmware and the 1.2.38 driver for Linux on CentOS 6/7 but whatever I try it only sends out unicast according to tcpdump or omping.

I also tried disabling the rp filters in Linux and manually adding the multicast route to the interface.

On the same switch I also have an NC550 card in a server and this one works fine with multicast.

Intel I218-V - slow transfers FROM gigabit capable devices

$

I have a desktop (1) PC with a Asus z97 Pro (wifi ac) motherboard and Intel I218-V NIC running Windows 8.1 Pro. I’ve been using it over Wifi, but recently ran a cable to it to get better transfer to/from my gigabit-capable Synology ds213j NAS. The transfers from NAS for some reason averaged 150 KB/s, but transfers to NAS are reasonable 70 MB/s. After troubleshooting I've identified that issue appears only in transfers FROM gigabit capable devices. Would be nice if anyone could help identify the reason and solve it.

Just updated to Intel PROSet driver version 20.0.10.0, but that didn't help. The link status was set to auto negotiation and speed was 1 Gbps/Full Duplex. Pinging any of the devices had minimal 1-5 ms latency.

Below I summary of troubleshooting with various connected devices to identify the problem and everything seems to point to I218-V adapter. I sent this information to Asus already about 2 months ago, but so far have not gotten back anything more than "yes, it'looks like a driver issue, we are investigating". It's getting annoying, I am considering to return the board and buy another, but I see that most of Z97 based boards are using same NIC. I got this board after returning two Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5 TH boards with faulty RAM slots, those boards used Intel I217V adapter and didn't have any transfer speed problems.

When I did troubleshooting I used driver 19.0.5.0 (if I remember correctly, basically latest of 19.x). At that point transfers to desktop (1) averaged out at 5 MB/s instead of 150 KB/s as currently. Not sure when and why it dropped, but it happened before I updated drivers, I haven't had any notable changes in hardware/infrastructure, might be caused somehow by to Windows Update (it didn't install network drivers, but did install Intel Management Engine Interface update). I also have OSX installed on this machine (I know it's not officially supported) and it still receives data at 5 MB/s from NAS.

TROUBLESHOOTING data sent to Asus

For comparison I started up my old desktop (2) PC running Windows 8 Pro on Gigabyte x58A-UD3R motherboard with Realtek RTL8111E 1Gbit NIC to see how it behaves. I tested copying files of size 1.5 GB. It transfers from NAS with ~100 MB/s, but transfers to with 40 MB/s (not sure why so low, but that is not an issue at the moment).

More interestingly desktop (1) transfers to desktop (2) with ~100 MB/s, but transfer from (2) to (1) is terribly slow ~500KB/s (jumping 0-100). It doesn’t matter if they are connected via switch or directly with 1m CAT5e cable. Also I saw transfers from (1) to (2) sometimes drop or even start at ~ 20 MB/s, even when connected directly.

Additionally I tested transfers from my Dell n5110 laptop with 100 Mbit NIC and for it both, uploads and downloads, maxed out at 11 MB/s with all devices.

My friend’s laptop with gigabit NIC experienced also had slow 500 KB/s (jumping 0-100) transfer to desktop (1), but in all other cases (transfer from (1) or to/from desktop (2)) it was stable at ~100 MB/s.

Summary of devices:

  • Desktop1 - Windows 8.1 Pro on Asus z97 Pro (wifi ac) motherboard with Intel I218-V NIC
  • Desktop2 - Windows 8 Pro on Gigabyte X58A-UD3R motherboard with Realtek
  • NAS - Synology ds213j
  • Laptop - Dell n5110, Windows 8.1, RTL8105E-VB 100 Mbit NIC
  • FriendsLaptop - Dell, Windows 8, Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet NIC

Below is summary of transfer speeds between devices. In most case they were connected via D-Link DGS-105/E gigabit switch. I also tried direct connections to Desktop1, but that didn’t have any positive effect. Desktop1 also has Linux Min 17.1 and OS X 10.10 installed and they had similar issues with transfers. I know they are not officially supported, just pointing out as additional information.

Transfer speeds ( arrow indicates direction )

Desktop1 < NAS = 5 MB/s ( sometimes around

Desktop1 < Desktop2 = 500 KB/s (unstable, jumps 0-1000)

Desktop1 < FriendsLaptop = 500 KB/s (unstable, jumps 0-1000)

Desktop2 < Desktop1 = 100 MB/s (in some cases just 20 MB/s)

Desktop2 < NAS = 100 MB/s

Desktop2 < FriendsLaptop = 100 MB/s

NAS < Desktop1 = 70 MB/s

NAS < Desktop2 = 40 MB/s

NAS < FriendsLaptop = (forgot make a note, but it was high)

Laptop  [All devices] = 11 MB/s

FriendsLaptop < Desktop1 = 100 MB/s

FriendsLaptop < Desktop2 = 100 MB/s

FriendsLaptop < NAS = (forgot make a note, but it was high)

Transfer speeds with Desktop1 booted into Linux Mint 17.1 and OS X 10.10

Desktop1_Linux < NAS = 700 KB/s

Desktop1_Linux < Desktop2 = 70 KB/s

Desktop1_OSX < NAS = 5 MB/s

Desktop1_OSX < Desktop2 = 100 KB/s

Desktop2 < Desktop1_Linux = 43 MB/s

Desktop2 < Desktop1_OSX = 40 MB/s

NAS < Desktop1_Linux = 40 MB/s

NAS < Desktop1_OSX = 5 MB/s

This all seems to suggest an issue with the Intel I218-V NIC on Desktop 1 receiving data from gigabit capable devices. The fact that I had similar issues in Linux and OS X points to either a hardware problem or some generic problem within driver in code that is shared among platforms. Can it be a hardware problem?

Here’s the list of things I tried in attempt to solve the issue:

  • update to update to latest drivers installed with Intel PROSet software version 19.5.303.0 (version 12.12.90.19 shown in device manager)
  • downgrade to version 19.1.51.0 listed on Asus web site (version 12.11.96.1 shown in device manager)
  • unplugging all Fast Ethernet devices (TV, SetTopBox, Laptop) from network based on some forum suggestion.
  • updated UEFI firmware to latest version 2012
  • Verified that [Adapter Properties\Link Speed] section shows 1 Gbps\Full Duplex link status.
  • Tried to force to “1 Gbps Full Duplex” mode instead of “Auto Negotiation”
  • Ran Cable and Hardware tests via [Adapter Properties\LinkSpeed\Diagnostics]. I used 3 CAT5e cables, one 15m connected desktop 1 to switch, two 1m cables (one at the time) were used to connect switch to desktop 2 or desktops 1 to desktop 2 directly. As you see in posted test results they are contradicting. First it says no problems detected and then reports bad connection and ridiculous distance to problem of 65535 = 2^16 (suggests a default initial value in a program). However, using the 1m cable without any reported issues to directly connect both desktops still produced same transfer results.
  • Tried to change Gigabit Master Slave Mode in Advanced Adapter settings to “Forced Master Mode” instead of auto detect

adding a PF to a linux bridge

Hi,

I have a VM that supports SRIOV using 2 VFs. And I need to setup another VM which doesnt support SRIOV using the linux bridges. So, I add the PF to the linux bridge using "brctl addif". This setup works for SRIOV VM but does not work for virtio-VM. The arp request from the external host is not seen on the linux bridge to which the PF is added. However, if the arp request is initiated from the virtio-VM, the arp request goes out to external host and both the VM and the external host have the arp entries populated and the ping works.

Is this right way to add the PF to the linux bridge? If yes, what else need to be done to make the setup work for VM with virtio interfaces?

thanks!

I218-LM ping times go through the roof after a couple of seconds on Lenovo x250 and T450s

We noticed lately that we are having poor ping times when pinging local resources that are connected with a LAN cable to a Cisco switch (WS-C3750-48PS-S 100MB fast ethernet) on certain Lenovo laptops, particularly the X250 and T450s. Both use the Intel I218-LM interface with the port built into the laptop shell while other models (X1 Carbon) use a proprietary dongle to connect the cable to. Only the models with the built in NIC port are showing the issue of very high ping times after a couple of seconds of operation.

When I ping a local file server the replies start out at 1-2ms reply times, After a couple of seconds they go up dramatically and the response times are

We found out that this issue does not occur when we remove the Synaptics Touchpad drivers and reboot the system. We have tried multiple different settings with regards to the advanced NIC settings

  • Interrupt moderation: Default is enabled, same issue when set to disabled
  • Jumbo Paket; Default is enabled, same issue when set to disabled
  • Large Sent Offload V2 (IPv4): Default is enabled, same issue when set to disabled
  • Legacy Switch Compatability Mode: Default is disabled, same issue when set to enabled
  • Performance options:
    • Adaptive Interframe Spacing: Default is disabled, same issue when set to enabled
    • Flow control: Default is Tx and Rx enabled, same issue when set to disabled
    • Interrupt moderation rate: default is adaptive, same issue when set to disabled
    • Receive Side Scaling: Default is enabled, same issue when set to disabled
  • Tried changing TCP/IP offloading Options with regards to IPv4 and no changed observed
  • Removed energy efficient ethernet under power management to no avail
  • We tried setting the link speed manually, the connection only works fine when we leave it to auto detect or 100MBps Full duplex (which is what the auto negotiation leads to), lower speeds or half duplex lead to non working connections.

After we change each of the above settings the ping times are back to 1-2ms after the adapter is reset but it quickly goes back to the high ping times posted above.

We also noticed that the issue comes back ~10 seconds after the Synaptics driver is installed and can provide procmon and wireshark logs for analysis.

When talking to Lenovo they mentioned that other folks are having similar issues and they resolved it by changing the storage drivers, so it appears there is some conflict with the Intel driver and other system components. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

ESXi 6 X710 Port Speed configuration

I have several X710-DA2 cards in the ESXi Server. When I leave the port speed of that cars as it is everything works fine. When I try to change the speed to 10GBit I get an error message: "Forcing 1000Mbps or faster may not be supported on this network device, please use auto-negotiation instead"

After that all X710 ports go offline and I cannot be activated again. The link is down and the vmnic has a red cross.

The only way to get it working again is to Restore the ESXi configuration backup that was made before the change.

Driver/Firmware is the following:

Hey All,

I have a VM runs on Cisco server that runs KVM with SR-IOV enabled.

4 VFs are attached to this VM and spoof check is off on all of them.

I still get 'spoofed packets detected' warning all the time

          "ixgbe 0000::0c:00.0 eth17: 2 Spoofed packets detected"

I read online that spoof detection is enabled by default (on compilation) on ixgbe driver when SR-IOV is active.

Any idea how to overcome this issue?

If any more information needed please let me know.

Thanks,

Shaham

Intel Ethernet Connection I218-LM - Wake Up issues

$

Hello,

We bought 6 new laptops with an I218-LM Ethernet card. (Dell Latitude E5540).

Everything works fine, excepted when the user is resuming from sleep mode or hibernation.

Using Wireshark, the PC is effectively trying to renew it's DHCP lease; our DHCP server is offering a lease, with no effect, and after 2 minutes, the NIC takes an APIPA address.

User have to disable and enable the card to get an IP back.

After some investigation, the problem occurs after installing SEP with NTP (firewall) feature, but we cannot find any event in the firewall log stating that something was blocked.

Of course, Symantec blames Intel's drivers....

I've tried every driver that was released recently, from the Dell and Intel websites, with no success.
I've tried to disable "Energy efficient Ethernet".

Going through Symantec support, I found this post which helped me somehow : http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/sep-firewall-blocking-dhcp-request-i-think-after-sleep-or-hibernation

I've uninstalled the tools for the card management and reinstalled the driver alone (using the one that was unzipped in the temp folder).

It works if I uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" box.

As my case is lost in Dell's infernal call centre loop, (they are replacing the motherboards every 2 weeks or asking me to reinstall the OS), I was wondering if you were aware of such issues with theses NIC's.

OS= Windows 7 x64 Pro SP1

Symantec=12.1.4013.4013

Drivers tested: original one (from 07/2013), 12.11.77.0, 12.11.96.1

Thanks for your attention!

After the laptop sits for a while the network becomes very slow

$

I have a similar issue.

Windows 7 enterprise x64, lenovo x250 laptops. Driver version is 12.12.80.19. Standard install of OS and used the lenovo system update to install all the drivers.

After the laptop sits for a while the network becomes very slow. To test I setup a continuous ping to a server on the same subnet. Here is where my issue diverges a bit from the thread. It's random when it happens and doesn't necessary happen when coming out of sleep or hibernation. This is happening on all the laptops that we have tested so far. Our power plan doesn't put anything to sleep other than the screen. I turned off power management on the NIC. The pings will start to drop and for the pings that make it the delay is very long, 1000ms+. If I make any change on the NIC that requires the NIC to refresh everything goes back to normal. If I unplug the cable and plug it back in everything goes back to normal.

I hope to resolve this soon as I'm rolling this laptop out to everybody in the company.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Eric

The VF's are also listed from ip link command:

    link/ether a0:36:9f:11:b8:10 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

vf 0 MAC 00:00:00:00:00:00, spoof checking on, link-state auto

As visible from dev rename28, vf 6, assigning vlan is working as expected,

ip link set rename28 vf 6 vlan 10

But setting rate limit on same VF is working,

sudo ip link set rename28 vf 6 rate 250

RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument

The guide used to realize this configuration is here, Configure QoS with Intel® Flexible Port Partitioning

I know that I should be using the latest iproute2, I am using iproute2-ss131122 which is never version.
